• Struvite recovery from dairy manure;
• Ammonia recovery from dairy manure;
• Engineered ecosystems for water quality improvement -- constructed wetlands, gravel biofilters, and stabilization ponds;
• Simultaneous nitritation and anammox in engineered ecosystems;
• Anaerobic digestion of food waste and dairy manure;
• Wood leachate treatment in subsurface flow wetlands in colder climates;
• Aquatic microbial ecology of natural and engineered systems.

Research Areas

• Ecological engineering and sustainable wastewater treatment (constructed wetland and similarly constructed ecosystems, anammox-based nitrogen removal processes, treatment mechanisms);
• Environmental engineering and resource recovery from bioresidues (anaerobic digestion, ammonia recovery, struvite recovery, kinetics and microbial ecology of treatment systems, slow pyrolysis and biochar)
