Chinese cities represent a typical case of the conflict between historic preservation and modern development that can lead to the loss of cultural identity. This thesis uses a morphological approach to analyze the cultural identity of Jinan, China, where the built environment is characterized by the presence of natural springs. The preservation plans of Jinan are reviewed to discuss the possibility its nomination as a World Heritage site.
