Constructed wetlands have been used for a long time to treat contaminated water and wastewater. However, less treated wastewater is being discharged into water bodies as it is reclaimed for water reuse purposes such as irrigation and aquifer recharge. This review paper focuses on the current status of constructed wetlands contributing to wastewater reclamation. Full-scale water reuse projects employing constructed wetlands show that there is an alternative to conventional treatment - discharge approach. This paper presents the various regulations which govern wastewater reclamation in the United States and discusses the factors which must be taken into account when designing a constructed wetland to reclaim wastewater.
